Services

I work on small-scale freelance projects and develop bespoke solutions that respond to the unique requirements of each brief.

I have experience producing exhibitions for museums and galleries, developing interpretation and learning resources, copywriting for marketing and communications, drafting reports, and running research, consultation and evaluation activities. Within all my projects I draw on my public engagement experience to produce outputs that are accessible, insightful and engaging.

Freelance services:

Interpretation and exhibition planning

A good exhibition will stop you in your tracks. It should tell you something new or take you into a different world. It might even change your life if you let it!

I can help you to identify what it is about your content that is unique and special and put this at the heart of your exhibition plan. I can develop engaging stories that will resonate with your audiences, and find creative ways to explore this content through object and media displays.

With experience of developing exhibitions at a range of scales – everything from temporary event displays to full museum redevelopments – I can adapt my approach to different size projects as needed. I’m flexible in my approach and can provide support for just some or all of the different stages of the development process: from the initial content research, through the definition of narratives and selection of objects, to the final stages of copywriting, production and installation.

I can work across a variety of topics but I have a specific interest in science communication and have worked previously for the Science Museum, the Royal Horticultural Society, and Oxford University Museum of Natural History.

Copywriting, proofing and editing

Communication is about more than just the words you use, it's about the way you organise information, focus your messages, and take your audience on journey through your content.

I’m a passionate believer in the importance of tailoring your communications; starting out with a focus on who you are communicating with, and why, and allowing this to guide decisions on the format, sequence, style and tone of your texts. I can help you to define and develop your communication materials and I have experience writing for different audiences and different purposes – for exhibitions, websites and social media, and also more formal outputs including annual reports and policy documents.

As a trained graphic designer, I often develop texts and design solutions in parallel to find the most effective ways to communicate your key messages. I employ best practice in visual and screen-reader accessibility and continue my learning journey in this area. I have prior experience as an Information Standard Reviewer and can also undertake proofreading and editing commissions to help you ensure high levels of quality across existing outputs.

Research, consultation and evaluation.

Well-designed research and evaluation should never be a burden. It should be an integrated part of your delivery process that enhances, rather than detracts or distracts from, your activities.

I design and deliver research, consultation and evaluation activities that make maximum use of all the potential opportunities for data collection already present within your operations. I specialise in the development of processes that encourage live, rather than retrospective, research activity and provide continuous rapid feedback. This brings the formative and summative research processes closer together to allow findings to be implemented and built upon whilst projects are in delivery, and it enables the continuation of the research beyond the initial commission.

Drawing on my experience in public engagement, I ensure that any new research and evaluation materials add value to your activities by enhancing opportunities for dialogue and exchange – internally with staff and volunteers or externally with your existing or potential audiences.

I can adapt reporting to different requirements as needed, and always ensure the delivery of clear and actionable insights to support your decision-making processes.

"Thank you for your excellent work on the First Animals exhibition report: it is everything I hoped it would be and it has been very helpful for developing and evidencing our impact case study for the Research Excellence Framework. I particularly valued your careful analysis of the complex audience data, and the clarity, attention to detail and flair with which you presented it."

This commission involved the collation and analysis of large-scale evaluative data sets and production of two separate reports for different sets of stakeholders. I utilised quantitative and qualitative data to get a comprehensive picture of the impact and learnings from the First Animals exhibition and programme. I proposed the production of multiple outputs as I believe in the importance of tailoring your content to the needs of your audiences; the detailed report was complemented by a shorter and more visually engaging version to support knowledge sharing and advocacy work.
